8 steps to prepping your car for resale

From external dirt, to stained seats and burned out taillights, the little details convey a message to potential buyers about how you have cared for your vehicle in the past.

According to a recent CNN Money report, even a minor sprucing up can add as much as $300-$500 to your selling price.

Factor in some minor repairs here and there and the increased value could soar as high as $2,000.

Given those encouraging figures, here are eight ways to help increase the selling price of your used car:

  1. Add a coat of wax to your fading paint;
  2. Give your headlights a proper cleaning;
  3. Clean your wheels and add a coat of Armor All to your tires;
  4. Ensure that the interior has been properly cleaned, including floor mats, seats and carpeting;
  5. Collect and organize any paperwork that shows proper maintenance;
  6. Replace burned out headlights or taillights and be sure that no interior warning lights are lit up;
  7. If your vehicle is worth $40,000 or more, hire a professional auto detailer to clean and polish it;
  8. While major repairs may not be worth fixing, little scratches and minor dents may well be worth the investment.
